Longtime fans of Boston´s hillbilly scene get misty-eyed when the conversation turns to the golden age of the early ´50s. There was a day when the airwaves crackled with WCOP´s Hayloft Jamboree (three shows a day at one point!), country music was all you heard at dozens of nightspots in and around BostOn, and even the snootiest Hah-vand-educated Boston Brahmin could walk into II Walker´s Riding Apparel and walk out looking like Bob Wills. Indeed, it´s been reported that Boston alone accounted for 25% of all country record sales in the American east during that era. So it´s bats off to The Twilight Ranchers for doing their level best to turn back the clock to that golden age. I first encountered them on a Friday night at the Plough and Stars in Cambridge; a bunch of guys dressed to the nines in vintage western duds and playing instruments at least as old as the songs they were playing. What stood out was the music, though; a blend of classic honky-tonk, hillbilly, and a bit of western swing that had feet a-tappin´ and liquor a-pourin´. There was really no room to dance, but people did anyway. Having since hooked up with string wizard/producer Sean Mencher (High Noon, Wayne Hancock) and engineer Matt Robbins (King Memphis), The Twilight Ranchers now offer the rest of the world a bit of. what Boston´s been hearing for the last couple of years. (2017/El Toro) 13 Tracks - Aisha’s earliest influences incorporated everything from Elvis and Sarah Vaughan to Billy Bragg and Northern Soul and once drawn into London’s incendiary rockabilly club scene, she felt the irresistible pull of black American Rhythm & Blues as a call to action, setting up her first band Tiger Lily and the Jitterbugs, with which she performed throughout the UK and Europe for several years. Subsequently, she was the first vocalist with the 10 piece big band, Blue Harlem performing Swing and Jump Jive. Throughout this time, she also sang Jazz and Blues in a variety of combos. She is currently working in England and Europe with ongoing Projects in Spain and London. Recent performances include events with the Aisha Khan R&B Revue, Blue Harlem, Cherry Casino & the Gamblers Big Jamboree and the Velvet Candles. She has just returned from the Screamin’ festival in Calella where she debuted the outstanding music from her new album release with her band, The Rajahs. Inspired by the Hank Williams and Leadbelly recordings he heard as a teenager growing up outside of Boston, Jim Rooney began a musical journey that intersected with some of the biggest names in American music, including Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Bill Monroe, Muddy Waters, and Alison Krauss. In It for the Long Run: A Musical Odyssey is Rooney´s kaleidoscopic firsthand account of more than five decades of success as a performer, concert promoter, songwriter, music publisher, engineer, and record producer. As witness to and participant in over half a century of music history, Rooney provides a sophisticated window into American vernacular music. Following his stint as a Hayloft Jamboree hillbilly singer in the mid-1950s, Rooney managed Cambridge´s Club 47, a catalyst of the ´60s folk music boom. He soon moved to the Newport Folk Festival as talent coordinator and director, where he had a front-row seat to Dylan ´´going electric´´. In the 1970s, Rooney´s odyssey continued in Nashville, where he began engineering and producing records. His work helped alternative country music gain a foothold in Music City and culminated in Grammy nominations for singer-songwriters John Prine, Iris Dement, and Nanci Griffith. Later in his career, he was a key link connecting Nashville to Ireland´s folk music scene. Whether he´s writing songs or writing his memoir, Jim Rooney is the consummate storyteller. It´s late summer 1972 in the redwood forests of northern California. It seems a safe and wondrous place, but some of the population of the town of Evergreen is growing pot in the trees, and others are bent on stealing it. Then there´s the coming folk festival, a jamboree bringing in musicians, music fans, war protesters, hippies, the Cossacks and other biker gangs, and the law, both local and federal. Skirting the edges are shades of the Manson family and the Mexican Mafia. Clifford Hickey is scheduled to perform at the festival in what might be his last guitar gig before heading off to law school to please his father. He arrives at the peaceful woodland campsite of his brother Alvaro, but within moments six armed men in badges crash the camp, and Alvaro runs. Clifford is arrested and roughly handcuffed. One of the sheriffs´ nephews has been murdered, and Alvaro is the posse´s quarry. When Clifford´s father and mother arrive on the scene, it´s the beginning of a confrontation between the Hickey family and the locals, including the Cossacks, who seemingly have their own agenda for Alvaro. Clifford, on the brink of adult life, becomes embroiled not only in a murder case but also in what becomes a battle between the Hickeys and the law and, ultimately, the Hickeys and their own past.
